TALKBACK

Legends: Live at Montreux 1997 Blu-ray

By Cyril Pearl -- Video Business,09/22/2008

EAGLE VISION
Street: Sept. 30
Prebook: now
> One-night-only quartet led by Eric Clapton delivers a crisp set of jazz, blues and rock.

This 1997 concert features a one-night-only live collaboration between guitarist Eric Clapton, drummer Steve Gadd, bassist Marcus Miller, keyboardist Joe Sample and tenor saxman David Sanborn. The stage show isn't flashy, but it still looks great in an AVC MPEG-4-encoded 1080p presentation. As with most Eagle Vision Blu-ray presentations, it's the audio options that are the most attractive to consumers, particularly high-end music/audio buffs. The 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio track and the LPCM 2.0 stereo track are rich and well-mixed, serving up a “you are there” kind of audio experience. Taking in the 13-track concert of improvised jazz, blues and rock as crafted by Legends' quartet of talents provides a sound argument that high-definition music releases are the new compact discs—the video is fine, but dig that audio!

Shelf Talk: The outstanding effort put into Legends' sound options and overall quality can't be denied and should be talked up to all audio lovers who want to give their systems a well-appointed workout. The musicians themselves also have followings—particularly Miller, Sanborn and, of course, Clapton—and that fanbase constitutes another enthusiastic market of consumers.

Concert, color, NR (nothing offensive), 107 min., BD $24.95, reviewed on a Samsung LN-T7081 LCD 70-inch HDTV with LED backlight and HDMI connection

"One night only" ? There was an entire summer tour of jazz festivals across europe. This was merely the first public performance.
