Lovely column, Laurence. I shared your reaction to Altman early on, but with time (and some repeated viewings) I, too, have come to appreciate him more and more. Watching his film of Prairie Home Companion a few weeks ago, I found myself quietly moved by the elegaic tone and subject matter. Yet, even after hearing Altman's comments about his health during the last Academy Awards show, I still somehow imagined we'd get many more years--and movies--out of him. It won't happen, but, ah, the DVDs remain!
