TALKBACK

Valentino Collection

FLICKER ALLEY

Available now
> Lovingly produced tribute to the silent-era star.

The silent screen’s original “Latin lover,” Rudolph Valentino, is seen to good advantage in this two-disc compilation of rarities, including four previously unavailable films: A Society Sensation (1918), Stolen Moments (1920), The Young Rajah and Moran of the Lady Letty (both 1922). Two of these have been digitally reconstructed, with the only available footage augmented by production stills illustrating missing scenes. All four boast newly recorded musical scores (including one by the incomparable Robert Israel) and show the iconic matinee idol at his romantic best. And they are accompanied by a dazzling array of supplemental features that alone would be worth the price of admission.

Shelf Talk: Strictly a “boutique” program supplier, Flicker Alley is well known in the institutional market and film-buff community for the tender loving care it gives to each of its releases. The Valentino Collection might be a tough sell outside these constituencies, but only because its subject is, alas, totally forgotten—despite the fact that he was a major star. You’ll be offering this set to a select clientele, but within that group, you’ll find strong support based on Flicker Alley’s previous successes.

Silent dramas, B&W/tinted/color, NR, 226 min., two-disc set $39.95
Extras: five bonus short subjects, biographical featurette, tour footage, “virtual scrapbooks,” stills gallery, slide show, booklet
Directors: George Melford, others
First Run: 1918-22

Rudolph Valentino is not forgotten! There are many people around the world who still seek out his films and appreciate his screen presence - his charisma and appeal endures still to this day. To any who are wondering what Valentino is all about, this collection should make them understand.

Glad to see the films are released for fans but I don't think Rudolph Valentino is forgotten, even now there are a few groups online remembering him.
