TALKBACK

The Source of the Secret

By Mayna Bergmann -- Video Business,06/23/2008

GT MEDIA
Street: June 24
Prebook: now
> Personal improvement program works as companion piece to best-selling The Secret .

Piggybacking on the success and fame of the personal improvement and motivational guide The Secret, but proposing to take it to the next level, The Source of the Secret is a 70-minute self-help DVD featuring the words and ideas of an eclectic mix of speakers, writers, doctors, evangelists and even sports figures. Talking heads include Shad Wehrli, a life coach and co-creator of the program; doctors Alex Loyd and Ben Johnson, who are founders of improvement tome The Healing Codes; Rabbi Daniel Lapin; Father John Calbom; and former Washington Redskins player Charles Mann. The basic premise of the DVD is put forth by Loyd: “There is truth in The Secret, but it aims too low.” Because we live in a “microwave society” that covets wealth, The Secret tapped into that, but greater happiness comes from finding inner love, joy and peace through a higher purpose, according to The Source, which makes a compelling, if somewhat repetitive case for the importance of a higher power.

Shelf Talk: This unofficial companion to The Secret will obviously appeal to the millions who have bought The Secret book, audio or DVD. (And if they didn't feel The Secret was particularly effective, don't be surprised if they give this title a shot anyway.) The Source will surely be buzzed about in the self-help community and on every Web site and publication featuring the many personalities involved in the program, so get ready.

Inspirational, color, 70 min., NR (nothing offensive), DVD $19.98

I have never written a review before. I have never felt the need to share my opinion in this type of format. However, for my experience with this DVD, I’ll share my opinion. I bought this DVD thinking that it would be an expansion on “The Secret” DVD that focuses on The Law of Attraction. It focuses on it, all right…in a negative way. The packaging of this DVD baits you into thinking that it will reinforce the teachings of The Secret. The back cover description vaguely describes the content material. It’s only when you start to view the feature that you realize how “religion” is at the center of this DVD. Please take note that I use the word “religion” in quotation marks. I am not a religious person, I AM a spiritual person. I find my spirituality from within and do NOT need an exterior source for enlightenment. This DVD insists that you MUST search outside yourself for what you need to live life with love and joy. While viewing this program, I went from eager to squeamish to disrespected. At the chapter start entitled “What is The Source of the Secret?”, I was told that “The Source” was “…our lord, Jesus Christ.” At this point, dear friends, the DVD player was stopped, the disc went back into the case, and I returned my copy to the Barnes and Noble from whence it came. I don’t have room in my life for negative energy or self-limiting propaganda. If that sounds good to you, add this to your shopping cart. If not, try something else.

This is such a powerful DVD, it adds that missing something which left a void after the secret.
