Blu-ray gets a cut

Just in time for Halloween, MPI Home Video’s Dark Sky Films label is entering the high-definition waters with a film sure to evoke some scares. In 1974, writer-producer-director Tobe Hooper unleashed a new brand of horror that still lurks within some of today’s films. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre is about to be released again, this time making its Blu-ray debut, promising even more vivid terror. —Cindy Spielvogel

The Texas Chain Saw Massacre The movie that redefined horror is arriving on Blu-ray with such bonuses as featurette “Off the Hook With Teri McMinn,” a first-ever on-camera interview with the star who left show business after making the film. Street Sept. 30, prebook Aug. 18; BD $29.98

Good lovin’ gone bad

Navarre’s BCI division will release 'Til Death Do Us Part, a TV series from independent filmmaker John Waters. The series is reminiscent of the black comedy of Alfred Hitchcock Presents. It’s a twisted show about the horrifying consequences of bad marriages, showing viewers what some couples do to each other when the honeymoon is over. —C.S.

’Til Death Do Us Part John Waters hosts this series as the Groom Reaper, who shows viewers when romance turns rabid and vicious husbands and wives gleefully “off” their partners. Street July 1, prebook now; three-disc set $29.98

Beetlejuice buoys Blu

Most horror films aren’t for youngsters, but a few family films in the genre have been made over the years. Warner Home Video has one that most family members can watch together. The studio this year will release the 20th anniversary edition and Blu-ray version of Beetlejuice, starring Michael Keaton. Both releases have three episodes of the animated Beetlejuice TV series, and the BD version also comes with a soundtrack sampler CD. The title is being released in lenticular packaging. —C.S.

Tricks and treats for tots

Older horror fans will have plenty to choose from for Halloween this year, but the trick-or-treat age group won’t be left out. Several suppliers are ready to release Halloween DVDs for kids, from classic cartoons to more recent programs appropriate for preschoolers. More fun than candy will be Classic Media’s Casper: Trick or Treat Classic Collection Vol. 1, Casper & Wendy: Scare Up Some Fun Classic Collection Vol. 2 and VeggieTales: Where’s God When I’m S-Scared? 15th Anniversary Edition. Coming from Paramount Home Entertainment is the animated Alvin and the Chipmunks: Trick or Treason. Anchor Bay Entertainment will provide Eloise’s Rawther Unusual Halloween. Warner Home Video has a special edition of It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown. And Hit Entertainment will release Hit Favorites: Halloween Spooktacular, featuring episodes of Barney, Bob the Builder and other shows from the company, all just in time for Halloween. —C.S.

Titles terrorizing the night

Known for its deadly serious horror films, Anchor Bay Entertainment is about to release a humorous film that spoofs horror movies. Brutal Massacre: A Comedy features actors from such films as The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (Gunnar Hansen), Dawn of the Dead (Ken Foree) and An American Werewolf in London (David Naughton). The mockumentary tells the story of a once heralded horror filmmaker (Naughton) who tries to make a comeback in the world of low-budget independent filmmaking. The cast has been touting the film at horror fests such as HorrorHound Weekend, Chiller Weekend and Fangoria Weekend of Horrors. Also due from Anchor Bay is a special set of the second season of the Masters of Horror series, available in a scary skull package. —C.S.
