The next hit family film in The Chronicles of Narnia franchise, the $141.1 million-grossing Prince Caspian, will arrive on DVD ($29.99) and BD ($35.99), as well as in a three-disc collector’s edition ($39.99), including a DisneyFile digital copy, on Dec. 2 (prebook Oct. 21).

Echo Bridge

The documentary Tantrums and Tiaras (street Nov. 25, prebook Oct. 28; DVD $24.99) is a documentary on Elton John directed by his partner, David Furnish.

First Look

Transsiberian (street Nov. 4, prebook Sept. 30; DVD $28.98) stars Woody Harrelson and Emily Mortimer as the perfect American couple traveling from Beijing to Moscow on the legendary Trans-Siberian Express train when they are caught up in a web of drug trafficking and murder.

First Run

In the Family (street Oct. 1, prebook Sept. 16; DVD $24.95) follows a woman as she connects with other women facing the same decision to take measures to avoid breast cancer in this documentary, which airs on the PBS show P.O.V. for October’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Fox

The $154.5 million-grossing Dr. Seuss’ Horton Hears a Who! (street Dec. 9, prebook Nov. 11) roars to life on DVD ($29.99), two-disc plus digital copy ($34.98) and BD ($39.99) in this animated adventure with voice talent including Jim Carrey, Steve Carell and Carol Burnett.

Genius

It’s morning, and the nasty flesh-eating monsters from the night before have moved on to feast on the inhabitants of a nearby town in Feast II (street Oct. 7, prebook Aug. 26; DVD $19.97).

Icarus

On one disc, The Point of Least Resistance and The Right Way (street Oct. 14, prebook Sept. 9; DVD $24.98) are two films in which multi-media artists Peter Fischli and David Weiss establish their characters in a series of adventures that take them from Los Angeles to the Swiss Alps.

Chaplin: 15th Anniversary Edition (street Oct. 14, prebook Sept. 17; DVD $19.98), starring Robert Downey Jr., features a remastered widescreen version of the film and new bonus materials, including two featurettes that document Chaplin’s film legacy, a never-before-released home movie of Chaplin and a retrospective interview with director Richard Attenborough.

In 1974, a young Frenchman named Philippe Petit stepped out on a wire illegally rigged between New York’s twin towers, then the world’s tallest buildings, as documented in Man on Wire (street Dec. 9, prebook Nov. 11; DVD $26.95).

Peace Arch

The Go-Getter (street Oct. 21, prebook Sept. 23; DVD $19.99), a road comedy, follows the story of a straight-arrow 19-year-old who, eight months after the death of his mother, steals a car and sets out to find his older half-brother he hasn’t seen in 14 years.

Porchlight

Dear Me, A Blogger’s Tale is a comedy that shows why some relationships are best kept private (street Nov. 4, prebook Oct. 1; DVD $24.98).

Adam Sandler’s You Don’t Mess With the Zohan, the $99.1 million-grossing action comedy that follows an Israeli counter-terrorist agent with a burning passion for styling hair, arrives Oct. 7 (prebook Sept. 4) on DVD ($28.96), in a two-disc set with digital copy ($34.95), and on BD ($38.96) and PSP ($24.94).

Strand

Fatih Akin, the director of Head-On, weaves overlapping tales of friendship and sexuality into a narrative of universal love in The Edge of Heaven (street Oct. 14, prebook Sept. 18; DVD $27.99); in English, German and Turkish with English subtitles.

 

Good things come in boxes

Boxed gift sets are coming with more and more inside, often without requiring excess packaging. Packaging for the DVDs in most multi-disc sets is more compact than for single DVDs, and some of the sets being made available before the holidays will be released on the Blu-ray Disc format, which can accommodate more content on less disc space. Yet, even in compact form, most of this year’s boxed sets contain a wealth of content, and many include additional material packaged with the discs. Bada bing, bada boom! Tony and his family are back in The Sopranos: The Complete Series (street Nov. 11, prebook Oct. 7; 28-disc set $399.99), which includes a 56-page hand-assembled album enclosed in a black linen box featuring all 86 episodes.

Furry subterranean creatures provide 47 hours of singing and dancing in Fraggle Rock Complete Series Collection, packaged with an original poster. Street Nov. 4, prebook Oct. 8; 20-disc set $139.98

The Hollywood Musicals Collection (street Nov 11, prebook Oct. 15; 61-disc set $499.98) includes performances from Elvis Presley (The Clambake, Flaming Star, Follow That Dream, Frankie and Johnny, Kid Galahad, Wild in the Country), Marilyn Monroe (Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, There’s No Business Like Show Business), Fred Astaire (Daddy Long Legs) and Frankie Avalon (Beach Blanket Bingo) in addition to Babes in Toyland; Goldwyn Follies; Kid Millions; Whoopee!; Yentl; Carousel; New York, New York; Oklahoma!; Sound of Music; State Fair; The King and I and The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

All four Indiana Jones films, including the new Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull in addition to Raiders of the Lost Ark, Temple of Doom and The Last Crusade, will be showcased in Indiana Jones: The Complete Adventure Collection (street Oct. 14, prebook Sept. 2; four-disc set $89.99).

RHI/Genius

Little Rascals: The Complete Collection (street Oct. 28, prebook Sept. 16; eight-disc set $89.95) represents all 80 shorts created under the supervision of film producer Hal Roach, presented in chronological release date order.

Shout/Vivendi

Mystery Science Theater 3000: 20th Anniversary (street Oct. 28, prebook Sept. 30; four-disc set $69.99) features four of the show’s most requested unreleased episodes—First Spaceship on Venus, Laserblast, Werewolf and Future War—and explores the genesis, life and afterlife of the show.

Warner

James Bond may have been on the big screen in the ’60s, but the small screen had The Man From U.N.C.L.E., whose Complete Series (street Oct. 21, prebook Sept. 16; 41-disc set $199.92) is being released in an attaché case. The controversial story surrounding John F. Kennedy’s assassination is revisited with the release of Oliver Stone’s JFK as an Ultimate Collector’s Edition, consisting of the two-disc director’s cut of JFK and the new documentary The Kennedys: America’s Emerald Kings (street Nov. 11, prebook Oct. 7; three-disc set $39.98, JFK BD $34.99, documentary DVD $19.97). Casablanca, the classic romance that won three Academy Awards including Best Picture, will be released in an Ultimate Collector’s Edition (street Dec. 2, prebook Oct. 28; three-disc set $59.98, BD $64.99).

For the younger set

Nobody likes the holidays more than kids, and there’s no shortage of DVD programming on the way to stuff stockings and put under the Christmas tree. Below is an assortment of some of the many kids’ titles coming to DVD in the fourth quarter. —C.S.

Arts Alliance America

Sunday School Musical is a faith-based take on the concept made famous by Disney, this time centering on a group of teens who enter into a song and dance competition to raise money to save their youth center (street Oct. 21, prebook Sept. 16; DVD $19.95).

Cartoon Network/Warner

Fans of Ben 10: Alien Force, Vol. 1 (street Oct. 21, prebook Sept. 16; DVD $14.98) can own episodes of the top-rated animated series that continues the saga of the alien-fighting hero.

Gaiam

Tween favorite Lucas Grabeel (High School Musical) stars as a boy who cooks up a superhero to rule the school cafeteria in The Adventures of Food Boy (street Oct. 7, prebook Aug. 26; DVD $14.98).

Lionsgate

Speed and his friends try to uncover the mysteries of the Academy’s virtual track in Speed Racer the Next Generation: The Fast Track, the second film from the new Nicktoons series (street Oct. 7, prebook Sept. 10; DVD $19.98).

Mill Creek

Coming to DVD are 40 of 126 licensed episodes of the classic children’s TV program The Howdy Doody Show (street Nov. 4, prebook Oct. 4; five-disc set $29.98).

Nickelodeon/Paramount

The Nick Jr. preschool series Yo Gabba Gabba! offers the DVD The Dancey Dance Bunch! (street Oct. 14, prebook Sept. 2; DVD $16.99), infusing retro-style and modern-day music to teach simple life lessons through a world of four friendly puppet monsters and a robot.

Porchlight

In the animated series Katakune, preschoolers learn about making friends and friendship, responsibility, safety and kindness (street Oct. 14, prebook Sept. 10; DVD $12.98).

Scholastic/New Video

The Night Before Christmas … And More Classic Holiday Tales (street Oct. 28, prebook Sept. 30; DVD $14.95) includes six additional stories: “In the Month of Kislev,” “Seven Candles for Kwanza,” “Too Many Tamales,” “The Little Drummer Boy” and two Rosemary Wells classics, “Max’s Christmas” and “Morris’ Disappearing Bag.”

Screen Media/Universal

Dog Gone (street Oct. 7, prebook Sept. 9; DVD $24.98) is a battle of wits when a tween and his dog are left home alone with his older sister and run into three bumbling jewel thieves looking for missing treasure.

Universal

The Pirates Who Don’t Do Anything: A VeggieTales Movie, cast with a boatload of VeggieTales stars, grossed $12.7 million at the box office as it entertained while teaching lessons on the importance of doing what is right, even when it’s difficult (street Oct. 14, prebook Sept. 9; DVD $29.98).

TV: U.K. vs. U.S.

Multiple seasons of TV series continue to come to DVD, both from America and other countries, most notably the U.K. Here is a small sampling of the many new and old TV shows that will be released here on DVD in the fourth quarter. —C.S.

Oct. 7 (prebook Sept. 9) marks the release of Midsomer Murders, Set Eleven (four-disc set $49.99), which offers four contemporary, stand-alone, feature-length mysteries—The House in the Woods, Dead Letters, Vixen’s Run and Down Among the Dead Men—from the British mystery franchise.

BBC/Warner

Doctor Who: The Complete Fourth Series (street Nov. 18, prebook Oct. 14; six-disc set $99.98) is the latest from the critically acclaimed sci-fi series, including 13 episodes and a Christmas special.

WGBH

This special collector’s edition of The Complete Inspector Lynley Mysteries (street Oct. 28, prebook Sept. 30; DVD $199.95) features all 23 Lynley mysteries that aired on Masterpiece Mystery! on PBS.

The family comedy The Donna Reed Show: The Complete First Season (street Oct. 28, prebook Sept. 23; four-disc set $39.95) is the first season of the series that ran for eight years after making its debut in 1958.

Cartoon Network/Warner

Adult Swim’s Robot Chicken: Season 3 (street Oct. 7, prebook Sept. 2; two-disc set $29.98), created by Seth Green and Matt Senreich, will be available just two days after the season finale, containing all 20 of the third season’s episodes and nearly three hours of bonus features.

Fox

The countdown gets a jumpstart as 24: Exile bridges the gap between seasons six and seven and is the first new material from the franchise in more than a year and a half (street Nov. 25, prebook Oct. 29; DVD $26.98).
