Lucky number 13

February will have the first Friday the 13th of the New Year, and Paramount Pictures and Warner Bros. will release the Friday the 13th remake in theaters. On Feb. 3, in honor of the occasion, several companies are releasing DVDs related to the original series of Friday the 13th films. Paramount Home Entertainment will issue several of the original titles, including deluxe editions of the first three Friday the 13th movies. Warner Home Video has Jason Goes to Hell, Jason X and Freddy vs. Jason, which the studio will release in the Jason Slasher Collection, complete with a theater pass for Friday the 13th. Rounding out the selection will be Anchor Bay Entertainment’s His Name Was Jason: 30 Years of Friday the 13th, a documentary that will air on Starz on Friday, Feb. 13. —Cindy Spielvogel

Friday the 13th Uncut: Deluxe Edition PARAMOUNT prebook 12-18; DVD $16.99, BD $29.99 Horror: The original version of the 1980 film is being released in a deluxe edition, along with deluxe editions of Friday the 13th: Part 2 and Part 3 3D (both DVD only, $16.99 each).

Jason Slasher Collection WARNER prebook 12-30; DVD $23.97 Horror: Released near upcoming theatrical Friday the 13th, this set contains Jason Goes to Hell, Jason X and Freddy vs. Jason.

His Name Was Jason: 30 Years of Friday the 13th ANCHOR BAY/STARZ prebook Jan. 2; DVD $19.97 Documentary: This tribute to the character Jason Voorhees and his 12 films is being released in a “Splatter Edition” with four hours of behind-the-scenes footage.

House rebuilt in special edition

In 2009, a remake of The Last House on the Left will come to theaters. To mark the event, MGM Home Entertainment in February is releasing the original 1972 film in a special edition. The collector’s edition will include commentary by actors David Hess, Marc Sheffler and Fred Lincoln, as well as more than 80 minutes of featurettes, including new interviews with director Wes Craven, a special deleted scene, outtakes, Craven’s annotated shooting scripts and other features. —C.S.

Feb. 24

The Last House on the Left Collector’s Edition MGM/FOX prebook 1-28; DVD $19.98 Horror: Timed with the theatrical remake, Wes Craven’s 1972 film about two kidnapped girls is released in a special edition.

Fox reflects on Mirrors

In the first weeks of the New Year, 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment will give consumers a chance to reflect with its DVD and Blu-ray release of Mirrors. The film starring Kiefer Sutherland will be released with an extended cut, and special features will include featurettes, deleted scenes and an alternate ending. The Blu-ray version also will offer BonusView mode, which will include a “Mirror Images” picture-in-picture commentary with director Alexandre Aja and co-writer/producer Gregory Levasseur along with a picture-in-picture scene-to-storyboard comparison; an animated storyboard sequence; and a downloadable digital copy of the film. —C.S.

Mirrors FOX prebook 12-17; DVD $29.98, BD $39.99 Thriller: In this $30.6 million-grossing movie, a security guard (Kiefer Sutherland) sees terrifying images in the mirrors of the department store he guards.
