A New Wave

> Hot young cast members hold key to success of this so-so caper comedy.

Aspiring painter Desmond (Andrew Keegan) hates his day job as a bank teller and initially allows his slacker pal Rupert (John Krasinski) to include him in a robbery scheme inspired by old movies. Desmond’s girlfriend Julie (Lacey Chabert) sides with her beau when he has second thoughts about being the “inside man.” This reasonably good premise, however, results in a strictly so-so film. Most scenes lack punch, and the direction is flaccid.

Shelf Talk: This film’s most prominent asset is its recognizable cast of popular young actors. Keegan of TV’s 7th Heaven, Krasinski of The Office and the recently high-profile film License to Wed and Chabert of Mean Girls all have fan followings. New Wave also can be compared to some of the caper films it references, including Sugar & Spice and Reservoir Dogs, although it’s vastly different in tone.

Comedy, color, NR (language), 94 min., DVD $27.98
Extras: featurette, music video
Director: Jason Carvey
First Run: DVD premiere
