Warner to distribute two-disc set of documentary later
By Jennifer Netherby -- Video Business, 8/13/2007
AUG. 13 | Netflix and Target will have a six-week exclusive DVD window on upcoming documentary Tony Bennett: The Music Never Ends from Netflix’s Red Envelope Entertainment, as part of a near simultaneous release of the flick on TV and DVD.
The documentary about the legendary performer, which includes an interview of Bennett by Clint Eastwood, the film’s producer, will screen for the media Sept. 10 in New York followed by a TV premiere on PBS on Sept. 12 as part of its American Masters series.
On Sept. 25, the DVD will be available through Netflix and Target, and the film will be on Netflix’s online Watch Now movie service.
Warner Home Video has inked a deal for DVD distribution rights and will release a two-disc special edition of the film to other retailers on Nov. 13. The special edition disc includes 60 minutes of footage of Bennett performing at the 2005 Monterey Jazz Festival. Warner has exclusive distribution rights of the film for all media outside of North America. VDI Entertainment will distribute the DVD in Canada.
The documentary, written and directed by Bruce Ricker, chronicles the music legend’s 50-year career and includes a conversation and jam session with Eastwood and Bennett.
“The film is a coming together of two American icons—Eastwood and Bennett—and a big leap for Red Envelope Entertainment,” Netflix chief content officer and executive producer of the film Ted Sarandos said. “The production and the unique rollout arrangements draw on the relationships and brand strength that Netflix has developed in the creative and distribution communities.”
Previous films from the Red Envelope division have been given an exclusive DVD release on Netflix, but this is the first time the rentailer has extended that exclusive window to another disc retailer.
