Most tourists take in Yellowstone National Park—our nation’s first national park—in the spring and summer, when the roads are packed with caravans of SUVs and recreational vehicles. But it’s in the winter, when the snow is plush and the air is so crisp it crackles, that the singular territory reveals its true magic. Of course, most of the park is closed to traffic and the backcountry is quite treacherous (federal permits are required to hike it), so it’s wonderful that cinematographers Shane Moore and Bob Poole braved the elements—and the wolves—to shoot exquisite images for this PBS program. It’s the welcome antithesis to the hunting shows on the Versus Network, with an emphasis on observing animals in the wild, as Linda Hunt narrates with restrained awe. Eagles, elk, a hibernating bear, lots of normally elusive wolves and a curious fox are on display.
Shelf Talk: TV documentaries tend to have legs, and this one, an episode from PBS’s well-respected Nature series, could be a seasonal perennial in locations with regulars seeking outdoor programming. The disc is available on the PBS.org Web site with other episodes from the series and sell sheets, but you’ll have to raise awareness in stores by featuring the box with other seasonal offerings.
