> Clever Hungarian animation that is stylish and energetic.
This irreverent, politically charged animated feature from Eastern Europe focuses on Budapest teenagers who employ time travel in a scheme to make them oil millionaires. It’s a cleverly written romp that offers Stateside viewers a rare look at a youth culture that reflects some American influences yet is unique in its own right.
Shelf Talk: Having won awards at the Calgary Underground Film Festival and the Seoul International Animation Festival, among others, The District has the right pedigree to attract culturally savvy viewers, but its political references might alienate some and its subtitles might scare away others. Accurately pegged as “an Eastern European South Park,” the flick will need a special push to reach an audience.
