> A sporadically funny send-up of sports movies.
In the mold of Airplane!, The Naked Gun and Scary Movie comes this spoof of sports movies, referencing such titles as Invincible, Radio, Miracle, Rocky, Bend It Like Beckham, Hoosiers, Remember the Titans, et. al. As with most movies of this type, it’s a hit-or-miss affair in which some jokes connect and others fall flat. David Koechner of Balls of Fury and TV’s The Office plays Lambeau Fields, a perpetual loser in several sports, who takes the job as head coach of the Heartland State football team, where he’ll go to any length to get his team to win. Helping him in his quest are his despondent wife Melora Hardin (also of The Office) and his promiscuous daughter (Brooke Nevin).
Shelf Talk: Fox is releasing The Comebacks around Super Bowl time, which is a good move. And it’s not a bad choice for audiences seeking a post- or pre-Super Bowl comedy for their parties. The film tackled $13 million in theaters and is destined to fare strongly on DVD. Fox will make the public aware of the title through strong online marketing and Internet exposure. The unrated version is 20 minutes longer than the theatrical release, all the better to snag a college-age crowd who likes their high-jinks on the raunchy side. Small bits by the likes of comics Andy Dick, Finesse Mitchell, Dax Shepard and Will Arnett, as well as athletes Michael Irvin, Bill Buckner, Dennis Rodman and others could help boost the market interest.
