> Lightweight adaptation of hit book boasts solid cast, romance and laughs.

Adapted from the bestseller by Karen Joy Fowler, this chick flick by Memoirs of a Geisha screenwriter Robin Swicord has enough names, witty banter and bittersweet entanglements to attract a sizable audience in its home video incarnation. The ensemble cast includes Amy Brenneman as a librarian who has a lesbian daughter (Maggie Grace) and was recently dumped by her husband (Jimmy Smits); multiple divorcee Kathy Baker; dog breeder Maria Bello; and French teacher Emily Blunt. The women form a book club dedicated to the writings of Jane Austen and plan to read a half-dozen of her books over a six-month period. Meanwhile, their lives begin to parallel some of the stories and themes found in Austen’s novels. Think Love Actually meets Love, American Style and you’ll get an idea of what goes on in this Club, which is a decent feature debut for Swicord.

Shelf Talk: This title should generate some steam on DVD, particularly as it’s timed for Valentine’s Day. Coming out at the same time is Disney’s Becoming Jane, a fictional look at Austen, so promote these two titles together, along with such other Austen-based titles as Persuasion, Pride & Prejudice, Mansfield Park and Emma.

Romantic comedy, color, PG-13 (mature themes, language, sexual situations, drug use), 106 min., DVD $26.96, BD $38.96
Extras: cast and crew commentary, deleted scenes, featurettes
Director: Robin Swicord
First Run: W, Oct. 2007, $3.5 mil.
