FEB. 25 | Popcorn Home Entertainment, which three weeks ago said it would provide Cablevision subscribers with some on-demand movies the same day they debut on DVD, chose TVN Entertainment as its distribution partner.
Closely held TVN, which distributes more than 3,000 hours a month from about 150 content providers, will process and encode films for Popcorn that will be sent from the studios to Cablevision, the companies said today. No financial terms were disclosed.
Popcorn on Feb. 4 said it would start making films from Universal Studios and Warner Bros. available to Cablevision subscribers the same day the movies are released on DVD, with the caveat that viewers must purchase the film on disc. Universal films The Bourne Ultimatum, The Kingdom, Eastern Promises and American Gangster all were to debut on the new service simultaneous with their DVD release, 30 to 45 days before they debut on traditional video-on-demand.
“TVN distributes product to every operator, so it was a natural fit for us,” said Steve Brenner, chief executive officer at Popcorn, and former head of VOD provider In Demand. “It was a very easy choice.”
Cablevision, which has about 2.6 million subscribers in the New York area, charges $19.95 for new releases, with older films selling for as little as $9.95. Once an order is placed, customers have 24 hours to watch the film on VOD with the DVD arriving days later.
