Kaleidescape goes upscale

Claims new player upconverts DVDs to full 1080p

JUNE 18 | FROM CONTENTAGENDA: Kaleidescape Inc., a maker of high-end home media servers that has drawn the ire of the studios and the DVD Copy Control Assn., has a new trick up its sleeve.

On Wednesday, the company unveiled two new movie players featuring advanced upscaling technology that produces full, 1080p images from standard DVDs that the company claims rival those produced by Blu-ray Disc.

In addition, the new 1080p Player includes a disc tray that allows for Kaleidescape’s advanced playback features from discs that have not previously been transferred to the Kaleidescape server’s internal hard drive, such as rental discs.
