Battle 360: The Complete Season One arrives at retail on Aug. 26 (prebook July 29; four-disc set $39.95) depicting the USS Enterprise, the one aircraft carrier that saw every major battle in World War II. Looking for a little mystery? Then Agatha Christie’s Poirot: The Complete Films Collection (street Sept. 23, prebook Aug. 26; 12-disc set $99.95), starring David Suchet, will keep customers on the edge of their seats. Just in time for the holidays, the entire five-time Emmy Award-winning series Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman: The Complete Series Megaset (street Oct. 28, prebook Sept. 30; 42-disc set $229.95) will be available for the first time, in a leather-bound collector’s set.

Coinciding with its TV debut is the World War II mystery series Foyle’s War, Set 5, the latest release of one of the most highly acclaimed and popular programs on PBS. The first set of Foyle’s War is Acorn’s No. 1 best-selling DVD, and all four already released sets rank among the company’s Top 13 in all-time sales. The fifth set arrives in its U.K. broadcast version on Aug. 5 (prebook July 8; three-disc set $49.99).

After enduring trials that would have crushed any other soul, Goku is now faced with the most important journey of his life in Dragon Ball GT Season One. In Dragon Ball Z Season Six (episodes 166-194), Cell proposes a tournament to demonstrate his newfound abilities and prove his superiority. Both sets arrive Sept. 16 (prebook Aug. 12; DVD $49.98 each).

Arriving on DVD July 8, Snoop-Dogg: Drop It Like It’s Hot (prebook now; DVD $19.95) chronicles the rapper’s 2005 performance in Brussels. With the same dates and price, Limp Bizkit: Rock in the Park captures two versions—original and remix—of the band’s performance at Nuremburg’s Rock in the Park Festival in June 2001.

Philosophy of a Knife

Coming Sept. 30 (prebook Aug. 26) is the Emmy-winning 30 Rock: Season Two, featuring Tina Fey, Alec Baldwin and Tracy Morgan working for a live sketch comedy show. George Clooney tries his hand at wacky romantic comedy in Leatherheads (street Sept. 16, prebook Aug. 5; DVD $29.98), set against the backdrop of America’s nascent pro-football league in 1925. Praised as one of the best comedy films of the summer, Forgetting Sarah Marshall (street Sept. 30, prebook Aug. 19; DVD $29.98) is a comic look at one guy’s quest to grow up and get over the heartbreak of being dumped.

80 Minutes
(street Sept. 16, prebook Aug. 19; DVD $19.98) stars Gabriel Mann as a man who has 80 minutes to live. Perfect Hideout (street Oct. 14, prebook Sept. 16; DVD $19.98), starring Billy Zane, is about a couple who kidnaps a man who is a serial killer. Ghost hunter Carter Simms investigates a house where an infamous family slaying took place in Death of a Ghost Hunter (street July 8, prebook now; DVD $19.98).

 

Shapely releases

Customers appreciate it when you screen DVDs for them, but in the case of fitness DVDs, what about actually trying one out? After a few days of hitting the buffet lines in Vegas, you can whip into shape Anchor Bay Entertainment’s 10 Minute Solution: Hot Body Boot Camp (street Aug. 5, prebook July 3; DVD $14.98), including five 10-minute kick-butt boot camp workouts. Some workouts are for viewers who meet certain requirements—like being pregnant. Nine 15-minute workouts that are safe for women during their pregnancy are featured in Gabrielle Reece: The Complete Fit & Healthy Workout 2 (street Sept. 9, prebook Aug. 7; DVD $19.97). Also included are 15-minute exercises for women in the first three postnatal months. Also arriving from the company Sept. 9 (prebook Aug. 7) is Element: Pilates Weight Loss for Beginners (DVD $14.98), a beginner’s workout designed to maximize calorie burn while teaching the basics of Pilates. —Barbara Wexler

Big Vision, lots of variety

If you’re looking for specialty titles, you’ll find plenty at Big Vision Entertainment, the DVD company that’s true to its name. From TV’s Ghost Hunters to wrestling and mixed martial arts titles, you’ll find plenty of product at the label, which is distributed by First Look Home Entertainment.

In time for the thrills and chills of Halloween, Ghost Hunters Season Four: Part 1 (street Oct. 7, prebook Sept. 1; three-disc set $24.98) features haunted army forts, libraries, asylums and the Palace Theater in New Hampshire, where Harry Houdini once performed.

Omega: Uncommon Passion—The Story of the Hardy Boys (street Aug. 5, prebook June 30; two-disc set $19.98) is a documentary that looks at the roots of the WWE superstars and their unorthodox approach to getting to the top by starting their own wrestling company.

Also from the wrestling arena, XPW Wrestling Television: Complete 3rd Season (street Aug. 19, prebook July 14; three-disc set $19.98) is loaded with bonus features never before aired on TV, behind-the-scenes footage, fan-cam footage, music videos and more. PWG Sells Out (street July 15, prebook now; DVD $19.98) is packed with more than nine hours of PWG’s best matches and finest moments. On Nov. 4, Big Vision brings mixed martial arts to Blu-ray Disc with the all-female MMA promotion Fatal Femmes Fighting (prebook Sept. 29; $24.98). —B.W.

Koch travels far for family, foreign fare

Artistic films from far and wide are coming from the Koch Lorber label, while the Koch Vision division of Koch Entertainment offers fare for the family.

The Marco Ferreri Collection (street Aug. 5, pre-book July 8; eight-disc set $149.98) includes El Cochecito (1960), The Seed of Man (1969), La Grande Bouffe (1973), Don’t Touch the White Woman (1974), Bye Bye Monkey (1978), Seeking Asylum (1979), Tales of Ordinary Madness (1981) and The House of Smiles (1988).

Also from Koch Lorber, Lagerfeld Confidential (street Sept. 2, prebook Aug. 5; DVD $29.98) looks at Karl Lagerfeld, the innovative designer who ruled the House of Chanel for more than two decades. Arriving the same day, Water Lilies (DVD $26.98) is the story of a love triangle that develops between three girls in a portrait of teen angst and nascent sexuality. Both are in French with English subtitles.

For families, from Koch Vision, the following titles are arriving Sept. 2 (prebook Aug. 5): Shelley Duvall’s Faerie Tale Theatre: The Complete Series (seven-disc set $99.98), along with Connect With Kids: High School Survival Kit and Connect With Kids: Middle School Survival Kit, both DVDs $19.98 each. Also from Koch Vision, Life With Derek: The Complete First Season (street Oct. 14, prebook Sept. 16; two-disc set $29.98) is from the Disney Channel show about two teens figuring out how to co-exist after their respective parents marry each other. —B.W.

Cartoon Net plays action card

The Cartoon Network has lots of animated action coming to DVD from sister company Warner Home Video. Ben 10: Season 4 (street Aug. 5, prebook July 1; two-disc set $19.98) follows the adventures of a kid who can transform into 10 different alien heroes, each with unique powers. Bakugan: Battle Brawlers Vol. 1 (street Aug. 26, prebook July 22; DVD $14.98) follows Dan and the Battle Brawlers as they use strategy and skill to unleash their Bakugan powers and save Earth from destruction. And from Adult Swim, there’s Robot Chicken: Star Wars (street July 22, prebook now; DVD $14.97), from creators Seth Green and Matthew Senreich. —B.W.

Genius covers all bases

With Genius Products’ wide assortment of programming, the company finds ways to offer something for everyone. From Sesame Workshop, kids can get moving this summer with Play With Me Sesame: Fun, Furry and Healthy Too (street Aug. 12, prebook July 1; DVD $14.93). Moving far away from kids’ stuff, an Australian wildlife tour becomes a bloodbath when the boat strays into the domain of a massive, man-eating crocodile in Rogue (street Aug. 5, prebook June 24; DVD $24.95). A Chinese martial artist returns to Shanghai to find his teacher dead and his school harassed by occupying Japanese forces in Fist of Legend (street Sept. 9, prebook July 29; DVD $24.95). Lou Reed’s Berlin (street Sept. 16, prebook Aug. 5; DVD $22.95) is the story of a drug-addicted couple and their slow demise, as told through Lou Reed’s emotive and provocative words and music. —B.W.

Adventures shine for Porchlight

Porchlight Home Entertainment is expanding beyond its core slate of children’s titles with two new labels. Porchlight Inspire is the company’s new faith-based label, and Ocean Park is its new label for quality independent, festival favorite-type films.

From Porchlight Inspire, Adventures From the Book of Virtues: Adventures in Faith, from the animated PBS series based on the best-selling book, shines on DVD Aug. 12 (prebook July 9; DVD $12.98). Also available on that date will be two other titles from the series, Adventures in Honesty and Adventures in Courage (DVD $12.98 each). All three titles also will be available together as Adventures From the Book of Virtues: The Box Set (DVD $29.98).

Also coming from Porchlight are two films on the Ocean Park label. A modern-day comedy of cross-cultural conflict and romance, Outsourced comes to DVD on Sept. 2 (prebook July 30; $24.98). Pope Dreams (street Aug. 26, prebook July 23; DVD $24.98), a drama about yearning to meet the Pope, has earned 11 awards at film festivals across the country. —B.W.

New Blu tint for Paramount

Blu-ray Disc fans were disappointed when last year’s box-office megahit Transformers was released as an HD DVD exclusive on the high-definition front. Since then, of course, things have changed. Paramount Home Entertainment, which had made its own transformation from being a dual-format distributor to becoming HD DVD-only, has made the switch to Blu-ray along with the rest of the industry. The company has announced plans for a two-disc special edition Blu-ray release of Transformers on Sept. 2 (prebook July 22; $39.99). Among other titles coming from Paramount are two from Comedy Central. Comedy Central’s Kenny vs. Spenny: Season One—Uncensored (street Aug. 12, prebook now; two-disc set $26.99) shows why best friends Kenny Hotz and Spencer Rice make better enemies in the reality show. South Park: The Complete Eleventh Season Uncensored (street Aug. 12, prebook now; three-disc set $49.99) features 14 uncensored episodes of the potty-mouthed kids. —B.W.

The latest installment in the Batman movie franchise, The Dark Knight, is in theaters this summer, and Warner Home Video will be ready to meet increased interest in the franchise with a collection of Batman DVD offerings.

Among the offerings will be a Batman Begins Limited Edition Gift Set (street July 8, prebook now; two-disc set $39.92, Blu-ray $49.99). The single-disc Blu-ray Gift Set includes The Dark Knight prologue (the first six minutes of the film); a Batman Begins motion art lenticular; a 32-page DC Comics book with exclusive photos, script pages and storyboards; a 16-page DC Comics comic book adaptation of The Dark Knight prologue; as well as a $7.50 “movie money” coupon toward the purchase of an adult ticket to see The Dark Knight in theaters.

The two-disc set includes a 128MB Batman-branded flash drive with 18 rare images from The Dark Knight, five Batman Begins collectible postcards with never-before-released key art and the $7.50 “movie money” coupon.

In addition to those and other Batman-related titles, many more offerings are coming from Warner’s vast libraries. One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, the five-time Academy Award-winning classic, will get the Blu-ray treatment July 15 (prebook now; BD $34.99). Errol Flynn: The Warner Westerns (street Aug. 26, prebook July 22; available only in the DVD Collection $49.92) contains Montana, Rocky Mountain, San Antonio and Virginia City. Also available Aug. 26 (prebook July 22), the Warner Home Video Western Classics Collection is available as a DVD set for $59.92 or as individual films for $12.97 each, containing Escape From Fort Bravo, Many Rivers to Cross, Cimarron, The Law and Jake Wade, Saddle the Wind and The Stalking Moon. —B.W.

Kimball’s in the Kitchen

WGBH has acquired the video distribution rights for the entire series of America’s Test Kitchen, the most-watched cooking show on public TV. July 15 marks the first time the series will be widely available at retail when WGBH releases America’s Test Kitchen: Season 8, bringing Christopher Kimball and the rest of the cast to DVD (prebook now; $39.95). More from WGBH also will be arriving soon. The character Inspector Robert Lewis, protégé of the legendary Inspector Morse, returns to the streets of Cambridge and the halls of Oxford University with three new mysteries to unravel in Inspector Lewis (street Aug. 5, prebook July 8; DVD $29.95). WGBH also will release Frontline program Storm Over Everest (street Sept. 2, prebook Aug. 5; DVD $24.95), which sheds light on the worst climbing tragedy in Mount Everest’s history. —B.W.
