JUNE 25 | LAS VEGAS—The Coalition for Quality Children’s Media named its inaugural Kids First! Top 100 Kids Films and is working with distributors to get the titles merchandised at retail in August.
The Top 100 was chosen by the public through online voting from a list of about 200 films selected by the Kids First! program. The list includes recent releases Alvin and the Chipmunks, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Ratatouille, Shrek the Third, Enchanted and Dr. Seuss’ Horton Hears a Who (due on DVD later this year), as well as such classics as Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, The Sound of Music, Miracle on 34th Street (1947) and Bambi. The complete list is at Kidsfirst.org/top100.html.
Coalition president Ranny Levy said the group created the list as a result of ongoing requests from media, parents and others.
The list will be promoted starting in August. Kids First! is working with distributors including Alliance Entertainment, Baker & Taylor, Ingram Entertainment and Ingram Book Group to merchandise the collection at retail. Magazines including GRAND, Moving Pictures Magazine, Metro Family, Los Angeles Parent, Boston Parent and Colorado Parent, as well as organizations including the Smart Television Alliance also will promote the list.
“We created the list to provide parents and caregivers with a reliable guide to evergreen films that are as good today as the day they were released,” said Levy. “The films on this list portray the values and ethics that we, as a culture, wish to instill in our children.”
