Hit celebrates Barney’s 20 years

Believe it or not, Barney has been around for 20 years. In honor of two decades of the purple dinosaur, Hit Entertainment is releasing The Best of Barney on DVD. PBS is creating awareness for the occasion with the airing of the Top 20 Barney & Friends episodes of all time. —Cindy Spielvogel

Dora, iCarly make disc debuts

In addition to launching the first in a three-year series of Dora the Explorer DVD movies, Nickelodeon is about to debut its popular series for tweens, iCarly, on DVD. “We expect these to be two of our biggest DVD releases of the year,” says Sherice Torres, senior VP of global home entertainment for the company. Dora Saves the Snow Princess will be followed with sequels in 2009 and 2010, which will mark the character’s 10th anniversary. The title will be supported by national advertising and consumer products along with a promotion with Target in which the DVD comes with an on-pack tiara. Dora the Explorer remains the top-rated preschool show on TV. Also coming from Nickelodeon is the DVD launch of iCarly, which is the No. 2 live-action series on cable among kids in the 6-11 and 9-14 age groups. The series about a teen with a weekly Web show incorporates videos created by kids themselves. Star Miranda Cosgrove is a recording artist, and the DVD’s bonus features will include one of her songs. Cartoon Network serves Chowder DVD

Cartoon Network Enterprises is cooking up its debut DVD release of Chowder, the animated series about an energetic lad who wants to become the greatest chef in the world. The primetime show, which debuted on the network in 2007, reached 11.5 million kids in the 6-11 age group during its initial 13-week run. Also coming from the company is the first volume in the latest series in its Ben 10 franchise. In Ben 10: Alien Force, the animated Ben Tennyson is five years older and has new alien identities. The DVD launch of the two programs marks "the debut of two of Cartoon Network's top-rated original series that both continue to build in ratings and expand their respective fan bases," says Christina Miller, VP of consumer products for the company. The original Ben 10 four-season series ranks as "one of Warner Home Video's top-selling boys TV franchises," she adds. —C.S.
