> Entertaining steroid doc explores both sides of the issue.
This documentary focuses on the use of steroids in sports and bodybuilding, an issue on which writer/director Chris Bell is clearly torn. The filmmaker explores his own disappointment when he found out his brothers and idols Hulk Hogan and Arnold Schwarzenegger used steroids and talks to bodybuilders who say the questionable practice is simply part of the sport. Bell makes good use of interviews with his brothers and parents, and discusses the history of steroid use, incorporating snippets of testimony at the recent Congressional hearings.
Shelf Talk: Variety’s review of this film called it “Super Size Me on steroids,” and Magnolia would do well to make that connection in its advertising and promotional campaign, which will have print, online and broadcast components. The movie takes a controversial stand, and anything you can do locally to exploit the controversy is bound to result in additional business.
