DEC. 11 | Videogames are proving resilient in tough economic times, as the industry’s November revenue climbed 10% over that same 2007 frame to $2.91 billion, according to the NPD Group.
Wii consoles drove a lot of the action as 2.04 million units sold during the month, topping still healthy showings by rivals Xbox 360 at 836,000 units and PlayStation 3 at 378,000 units.
Hardware specifically jumped 10% to $1.21 billion; software, up 11% to $1.45 billion; and accessories, up 7% to $255.4 million.
Year to date, all videogame category segments lifted 22% to $16.04 billion.
“The videogame industry continues to set a blistering pace overall, with total month revenue 10% higher than last November, even with seven less days of post-Thanksgiving shopping this year compared to last,” NPD analyst Anita Frazier said.
She also was impressed with all the consoles’ November performances.
“It’s clear there can be more multiple victors this generation, and while price is certainly a strong factor, particularly as the current economic situation continues to prevail, the most important factor that will drive success in 2009 will be the lineup of compelling games that will keep consumers involved in the industry,” she said.
Top November software titles were Xbox 360 titles Gear of War 2 and Call of Duty: World at War and Wii titles Play and Fit.
