Wonk this way

April 27, 2009 Final Update: Thanks to all for your kind comments. Here's hoping our paths cross again.

Well, this is it: the post I've been putting of writing because I wasn't sure exactly what to say, or how. I'm still not sure. But it is Media Wonk's sad duty to report that Content Agenda will be shutting down this week. Our parent company, Reed Business Information, has decided not to continue supporting the site, making us officially a victim of these very hard times in the publishing business. Our last day will be Friday, May 1. I would like to thank all our readers, contributors, supporters, friends and competitors for helping us get this far. I think we gave 'em a good run and now it's time to move on. I wish you all the best of luck in the future.

Though Content Agenda is shutting down, Media Wonk will be soldiering on alone, for those who might still be interested. I've established a blog, The Media Wonk, at www.themediawonk.com, where I plan to continue writing about many of the same topics I wrote about here, and maybe a few others. The site is currently live, but is still very much a work in progress. I hope to get it looking like something soon.

In the meantime, Media Wonk can be reached at psweeting@comcast.net, (202) 506-4452. I hope you'll wonk along with me.

Sorry to see you go. This site was always good for technology information. I will tune into the blog and maybe you will start a twitter site as well.

Paul,
It was an absolute pleasure launching Content Agenda with you. Although I moved on a while ago, I've been following Content Agenda with pride. While I understand that this site never did get either the marketing support or traffic that it deserved, the fact is that Content Agenda has filled a necessary space in the coverage of digital media and policy. The fact that RBI is shutting down ANY cutting edge, low-cost, online-only properties to prop-up its print-centric business remains mind boggling to me. I wish you all the best on themediawonk.com.

Content Agenda is so important to us...we learn so much from you Paul....please sign back into this comment thread and reassure us readers that not only your superb commentaries but also all the information you have been aggregating here on Content Agenda will still be pulled together for us elsewhere.

Will videobusiness.com continue to feature your blog under the 'blogs' tab on their homepage?

Will the aggregation of news and industry videos you offer here at CA continue on your blog?

What could you do at Content Agenda that you will not be able to duplicate on your own blog and that videobusiness.com or other RBI properties does not plan to offer - and where should we-the-readers go to fill that information gap?

A number of your recent commentaries emphasize the importance of aggregation as central to the definition of 'added-value' in the media world ahead. Difficult though things may have been for Content Agenda, surely there's got to be a pony in here somewhere...

This site has developed some of the future here in the UK, especially in the TV transmission industry, paving the way is important and the information I have got from this site has created extraordinary innovation.

Please try to save it one more time.

Scott--I'm afraid I won't be able to duplicate the breadth of news aggregation we compiled here at Content Agenda on The Media Wonk. Content Agenda paid LexisNexis for access to its global database of news sources, which we drew on for the bulk of our content. Unfortunately, I'm not in a position to continue that on my own. I do plan to make links and aggregation a component of The Media Wonk, though, so I hope you'll check in regularly. Thanks for your kind comments.--Paul

Say it ain't so Joe! I think your observation that content agenda is a victim of the times is correct in the same way that Al Gore's presidential Run was a victim of its times. As with that situation I think that we are the one's that are really loosing here and I can't help but believe that you will go on to find even more rewarding avenues of expression. I describe you to people that don't know you as "the smartest journalist in the video business". That remains true whether your work is being done through content agenda, Media Wonk or what ever you do. What I would like to see you do next is become Jon Stewarts Media reporter. Your out of the box intelligent and yet slightly irreverent take on your industry seems tailor made for his show. However what ever you do next, count me in as reader. Like Jon Stert, the brand is and should be Paul Sweeting not Content Agenda anyway.
I wish you well my friend.
