An American Idol Eats Out....Again!
June 14, 2007

Jim Verraros was excited to be on the first season of TV’s American Idol and sensed it was something special, but he had no idea how monumental the show would become. Nor did he imagine that he would snag a

juicy role in Q. Allan Brocka’s 2004 breakout gay comedy Eating Out. And even further from his mind was the possibility that a couple of years later he would re-create his Eating Out role of Kyle, a gay guy who convinces his straight roommate to pretend he’s gay to he can score a hot girl, in the 2006 sequel Eating Out 2: Sloppy Seconds (Ariztical, $24.95).

“We kinda joked around about the sequel—of course, it was made because of the success of the first one,” Verraros told us in a recent interview. “A gay, independent comedy is kinda hard to sell to the mainstream, but it picked up a cult following.”

The original Eating Out was Verraros’s first feature film following his 2002 blast-off to fame in American Idol alongside Kelly Clarkson and Justin Guarini. Though he describes the American Idol experience as “a crash course in the entertainment industry,” Verraros was fortunate in that he didn’t have to endure the audition process for his role in Eating Out.

“I was lucky enough to be courted by the director of Eating Out,” he told us. “I didn’t play the pop star kind of thing.”

Verraro’s would like to further develop his acting and musical careers like fellow Idol star Clarkson.

“It’s unbelievable to see Kelly blossom into such an amazing artist. I would love to have that sort of career,” he said. “It’s cool to see how huge American Idol and to know that all of us from the first year are a part of history.”
