Holocaust Debuts on DVD
May 16, 2008

On May 27, the eve of the 30th anniversary of its TV broadcast, CBS Home Entertainment/Paramount will issue the acclaimed TV miniseries Holocaust on DVD. (Did the studio really need some sort of anniversary tie-in to issue so important a television series? I guess so).

Back in the mid-Seventies, you really didn’t get all that many TV shows or mini-series about the systematic slaughter of six millions Jews by the Nazis, so the eight-hour-long Holocaust, which was directed by TV

veteran Marvin Chomsky, really was a special piece of work, for more than just the obvious reasons. It was required viewing in my suburban New Jersey home and as a teenager, it really made its mark on me. And not just for the aforementioned “obvious reasons,” but also for its stellar cast. I think it may be the first time I had ever seen the work of up-and-coming co-stars Meryl Streep and James Woods.

Holocaust also starred Michael Moriarty, Fritz Weaver, Joseph Bottoms, Tovah Feldshuh, Rosemary Harris, David Warner, Sam Wanamaker, Michael Beck, Nigel Hawthorne and Ian Holm as Heinrich Himmler. Technically, the epic mini-series was an unqualified success, garnering strong ratings and a slew of honors, including a staggering nine Emmy Awards.

I guess that can sort of be considered a happy ending to a terrible story. It’s just too bad there had to be a story to begin with.
