Jolene Blalock Captains her own Starship, Pt. I
July 21, 2008

Star Trek sex symbol Jolene Blalock receives a promotion of sorts in the new DVD Premiere feature Starship Troopers 3: Marauder, due from Sony on Aug. 5. Where she played an enticingly logical Vulcan commander on TV’s Enterprise, Ms. Blalock has now graduated to the rank of captain in ST3.

“My character, Captain Lola Beck, is a pilot. She’s a rather strong female, a leader, who’s got a lot of brains and brawn,” she says of the role. The movie revolves around the efforts of Johnny Rico (Casper Van Dien, back from the original 1997 film) to rescue Capt. Beck and other Troopers who have are stranded on a planet

ruled by — you guessed it — humongous bugs. “Working with Casper was awesome,” says Blalock. “I was a fan of the first ST and a decade later I’m glad to be in the second one.” When reminded that this is actually the third movie, Blalock corrects herself adding, “That’s the way my mind works. The second film had none of the original characters, and it decided to go in a direction that took away the political satire, it was a bit more serious. In this one, we pick from the first film, 10-11 years later.”

Blalock’s fan favorite status is confirmed by the many fan-created videos featuring her on YouTube. ST3 may generate more YT clippage, as she plays a no-nonsense, Sigourney Weaver-like alien fighter. “I have some butt-kicking moments and some scenes where my character is firing off her weapon. There’s also a big kiss scene at the end….”

Having starred on Enterpriseand appeared in episodes of Stargate SG-1 and the TV movie Jason and the Argonauts, Blalock has a track record in fantasy that she’s proud of, as she’s a big fan. “My heart lies in sci-fi, because I have a fascination with what could be…. I love it because within the genre you can clearly see humanity as one united people, one race. It breaks down the lines that divide us.”--Ed Grant

Check back later in the week for the second half of Ed's intervie with Jolene Blalock!
