The Deep + Blu-ray technology = Jacqueline Bisset in high-def!

July 10, 2009

Sony issued The Deep on Blu-ray this past week. It’s a not-bad thriller based on a best-selling book by Peter (Jaws) Benchley starring Nick Nolte, Robert Shaw and Jacqueline Bisset. Now, the beautiful Ms. Bisset had been around for a while by the time The Deep was produced, appearing in such projects as Casino Royale, Airport, Truffaut’s Day for Night, Murder on the Orient Express and a whole bunch more. But it was The Deep--and her deep sea dive whilst wearing a clinging T-shirt in the opening scene—that turned launched her to leading sex symbol status.

That said, I made a wild assumption that the Blu-ray community’s bloggers and critics—many of whom were

probably in their formative teen years when The Deep was released to theaters in 1977--would have a lot to say about the arrival of Ms. Bisset’s legendarily lithe form in a high definition format. I was right (though a couple of’em didn’t even care about the high-def aspect--just juicy Jackie!). Here are what three of my esteemed fellow writers had to say:

“Judge Dan Mancini declares Jacqueline Bisset the winner of this two-hour wet T-shirt contest…The many underwater sequences, which feature all manner of exotic aquatic life like puffer fish, tiger sharks, moray eels, and Jacqueline Bisset's nipples, have appealing depth and detail while still looking very much like celluloid.”—Dan Mancini, DVDVERDICT.com

“Jacqueline Bisset is a spirited and capable in the role of "the girl" in a masculine adventure. Bisset is also the film's most impressive special effect -- she plays the entire first episode in a wet T-shirt, a spectacle guaranteed to make most males light-headed. It's a clear victory for the talented Bisset -- she's such a classy actress that she transcends definitions of exploitation….The HD picture looks great at all times. Colorful fish surround the divers as they snoop for buried treasure, and the enormous close-ups of Ms. Bisset revive Old Hollywood notions of glamour.—Glenn Erickson, DVDTALK.com

“Nick Nolte and Jacqueline Bisset, the latter -- and the film -- best known for her revealing opening sequence, deliver suitable performances from start to finish.—Martin Liebman, BLU-RAY.com
