Multiple Blades

Having just negotiated for a long-term license on the film (rights had lapsed a year ago), Warner announced that it will issue a restored and re-mastered DVD version
of the 1992 Director’s Cut (is there only one?) in September. But one version of one of the most sought-after titles on DVD wouldn’t be nearly as profitable three, would it? So, coming in 2007 is a multi-disc Special Edition DVD release which will contain FOUR versions of the film: the 1992 Director’s Cut, the Original U.S. Theatrical Cut, the Expanded International Theatrical Cut and Ridley Scott’s “definitive” new version, Blade Runner: The Final Cut.
We love that a chunky box housing four different versions is due next year, but we ain’t all that thrilled that Warner wants to cash in earlier with a “restored and remastered” version of the Director’s Cut, which was previously issued back in 1997 and then again 2004 as part of a two-pack with The Fugitive.
Warner has also announced that the cut will be placed on moratorium after a four month limited release—so everyone better buy their copy NOW!!
Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? Probably not, but we wouldn’t be surprised if the late Philip K. Dick had nightmares over the apparently greedy legacy that’s accompanying the movie adaptation of the book that bears his name.
