Where Soars the Surfer? DVD, Of Course!
September 21, 2007

Lifelong Fantastic Four fans and newbies alike will be drawn in by the supplements being prepared for the upcoming DVD release of Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (Fox, Oct. 2), according to Jon

Mefford, the producer of the package.

“We’re trying really hard to make the bonus materials accessible to both the uber-fan and those who are coming to the characters fresh,” declares Mefford, who works for DVD supplement experts Sparkhill. The result is a two-disc Special Edition that will include several featurettes on the comic’s history and the making of the film. The spotlight piece of the set is the 90-minute behind-the-scenes documentary Family Bonds. Says Mefford, “Most of these documentaries rely heavily on talking heads shot after the fact. Family Bonds contains footage that was all shot on the set. We were there nearly every single day, and got some very exclusive footage of the production.”

The featurette that will be of most interest to comic readers is Sentinel of the Skyways, a one-hour documentary on the Silver Surfer that includes comments on the character from his co-creator Stan Lee, as well as ’60s interpreter John Buscema and J. Michael Straczynski, the Babylon Five creator and writer of Silver Surfer: Requiem who is reportedly set to write the Surfer spin-off movie for Fox.

Mefford is confident that the extras planned for Rise of the Surfer will please FF fanatics. “We’ve worked with Marvel and Fox on a few projects so far [including Daredevil, Elektra, and the preceding FF feature], and we’re looking to do something different every time out.” –Ed Grant
