Alex Kovalev Shoots and Scores
March 24, 2008
Russian-born ice hockey legend Alexei “Alex” Kovalev, formerly of the New York Rangers and Pittsburgh Penguins and currently of the Montreal Canadiens, gets down to the serious business of hockey how-to’s in the upcoming My Training Methods: Alex Kovalev, a two-disc set due on April 1 from Lionsgate.
“I’ve been thinking about doing this for a long time,” Kovalev told VB in an interview last month. “I teach Master Classes in Russia and I do some skating and talking in New York—people are always asking me how I do
things, so it was time.”
In a group of drills designed by his personal trainer Tommy Sheehan, Kovalev (who in 1991, was the first Russian player to be drafted for the NHL in the first round), engages in a series of on-and-off ice exercises, including both hockey and training maneuvers. All of the action is captured by 24 high-def cameras.
“We shot the production at a facility an hour outside of Montreal that had an indoor soccer surface and a hockey rink.” Kovalev remembered. “With the 24 cameras, we got so many angles, all of them interactive. You can jump fro one angle to another by clicking on an icon.”
Kovalev has arranged for all profits from the DVD to go to the Gift of Life Foundation, a worldwide organization that helps children in need of cardiac surgery.
“I’ve been working with Gift of Life Foundation for the past six years—I had a heart affliction as a child and I overcame it,” Kovalev said. “Things are good for me and I want to give something back. Eventually, everyone has to give something back.”
