Michael Jackson Sells and sells and sells...

July 1, 2009

That Michael Jackson’s formidable catalog of music and videos would see some substantial action since his death last Thursday was a given, but I’ve got to admit I’m surprised at just how crazy the sales have been. He was one of the biggest-selling artists of all time, for heaven’s sake, so I'm wondering just how many consumers hadn’t already purchased their Jackson products over the past three decades!?

But the numbers don’t lie and they’re quite remarkable. As of last Friday, Jackson’s albums accounted for all 10 of Amazon’s “Bestsellers in Music” list, with the 25th Anniversary Edition of Thriller taking the top spot. Barnes and Noble’s website’s 10 bestselling CDs were also Jackson’s titles and Border’s site was also going through the roof with Jackson sales. Ditto for iTunes, where nine of the top 10 albums were Jackson’s by Friday afternoon. The Essential Michael Jackson collection was the top-selling album, followed by Thriller.

In terms of visual home entertainment, Michael Jackson-related DVDs were the top five sellers on Amazon as of Monday, June 29. The titles, all from Sony, include Michael Jackson-Video Greatest Hits: HIStory, Michael Jackson: HIStory on Film, Vol. 2, Michael Jackson: Live in Bucharest - The Dangerous Tour, Michael Jackson - Dangerous: The Short Films and Number Ones.
