Meeting Malin Akerman
May 5, 2008

Malin Akerman, co-star of the hit romantic comedy 27 Dresses, was born in Stockholm, Sweden and raised in Toronto, Ontario when her family relocated to Canada a couple of years after she was born. But Ms. Akerman has a lot of family in Stockholm and she travels back and forth to Sweden frequently, speaks fluent Swedish and is very familiar with Swedish courtship and wedding rituals. Attending last week’s “Always a Bridesmaid, Now a Bride” competition held by Fox Home Entertainment to celebrate the DVD release of 27 Dresses, I had a chance to ask the beautiful actress about traditional Swedish weddings when compared to the kind of wedding she almost had in 27 Dresses.

“Swedish weddings are not as big and lavish as American weddings! I find that American weddings kind of hit you in the face, while Swedish celebrations are a little bit more minimalist,” she told me during a red carpet

interview. “The most important aspect of a Swedish wedding is the seating plan--couples are never seated together, they’re seated with different people so everyone can mingle. “And you’re not allowed to wear black at a Swedish wedding—you only wear black at funerals. It’s a very big slap in the face to the bridge and groom if you go to their wedding wearing black!”

We spoke a bit more about weddings and such, but as the gathering took place on the same weekend as the theatrical opening of Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo, I remembered to also ask her if she had been approached to reprise her role of the silly and sexy Liane in 2004’s Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle in the new film.

“They didn’t approach to be in it and I’m very upset about it,” she joked. When Harold & Kumar first came out, people everywhere were recognizing me for it and it was great. The best part was that I would try to see if they were recognizing me for my face or my body.

“But that was the nature of the scene and it was really fun to do,” she added with a giggle.
