The Doctor is Strange
August 3, 2007
“Doctor Strange has always been the kind of character who, when he makes crossover appearances in other comics, turns the whole book upside down,” said Craig Kyle, senior VP of Marvel Animation, in a recent interview. “He’s a reflection of how wide and wild the world of Marvel is, and we are very pleased with the way
recounts the character’s origin and finds him facing off for the first time against the Dread Dormammu.
In the film, Strange’s costume looks somewhat muted compared to the bright psychedelic colors of Steve Ditko’s original.
“It was important to get his clock in there; it was an element people were expecting, but it was also important not to jar the new audiences too much,” said Kyle. “The colors that were used by the comic book guys were intoxicating and incredible. In animation, though, you have to do things a little differently to convey the wonder and magic.”
As to the question of which Marvel hero will get the animated-feature treatment next, Kyle offers a hint:
“Thor is at the top of the list,” although he admits a personal fondness for the Hulk, whom he colorfully describes as a “beautifully demented child.”--Ed Grant
