SEPT. 23 | PHYSICAL: The $180 million box-office hit X-Men Origins: Wolverine debuted this week at No. 1 on the DVD and Blu-ray Disc rental and sales charts, according to Rentrak.
Starring Hugh Jackman as the title character, 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment’s release also dominated the download-to-own charts for Blockbuster, CinemaNow and iTunes.
Other new releases this week included Summit Home Entertainment’s Next Day Air, the No. 7 DVD seller and No. 4 DVD rental. The $10 million-grossing urban comedy stars Donald Faison, Mike Epps and Mos Def.
Following the Sept. 20 Emmys Awards, several TV DVD titles debuted on the DVD sales chart, including Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment’s Grey’s Anatomy: Season 5 (No. 3), Fox’s It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia: Season 4 (No. 10) and Warner Home Video’s The Big Bang Theory: Season 2 (No. 13).
Also new on the DVD sales chart was Lionsgate’s 1987 film Dirty Dancing, which likely made a showing in the Top 20 following Patrick Swayze’s recent death from pancreatic cancer.
Among high-definition titles, three of Universal Studios Home Entertainment’s catalog releases debuted in the Top 10 Blu-ray sales chart, with Van Helsing at No. 6, An American Werewolf in London: Full Moon Edition at No. 7 and Army of Darkness: Screwhead Edition at No. 9.
