Blockbuster, CinemaNow closer to On Demand launch

DIGITAL: Joint service expected to start in late fall

By Jennifer Netherby -- Video Business, 9/22/2009

SEPT. 22 | DIGITAL: Sonic Solutions and Blockbuster are getting closer to launching the new Blockbuster On Demand digital movie service, which will be powered by Sonic’s Roxio CinemaNow, the two companies said Tuesday.

The service is expected to launch in late fall and be available through TiVo digital video recorders, Samsung HDTVs, Motorola mobile phones and an assortment of home theater systems and Blu-ray Disc players.

The two announced their multi-year partnership earlier this year in a bid to expand the reach of both movie services.

“Combining Blockbuster’s trusted brand with Sonic’s digital delivery technologies has proven to be a very successful formula,” Sonic president and CEO Dave Habiger said in a statement.

Blockbuster chair and CEO Jim Keyes said the company plans to continue to work with Sonic to strike delivery deals with other consumer electronics manufacturers to “expand our reach to more home and mobile electronics."
