Fox, MGM ready Blu-ray payload
AUG. 20 | After a slow start in high-definition, 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment and MGM Home Entertainment are now slating Blu-ray Disc titles with a vengeance, slotting 29 releases for the rest of the year, including summer blockbusters Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (pictured) and Live Free or Die Hard. More

  • Profit up tenfold for Hastings' Q2
    AUG. 20 | Movies and videogame strength powered Hastings Entertainment to significant profit gains in its second quarter. For the three months ended July 31, Hastings recorded $1.9 million in net income, nearly 10 times its take for the same period last year.
  • Paramount supports HD DVD exclusively
    AUG. 20 | In a surprise move sure to shake up the high-definition format battle, Paramount Home Entertainment said today that it will exclusively support HD DVD beginning with Aug. 28 release Blades of Glory. Paramount said that all movies from its labels will be released in high-definition on HD DVD only worldwide. Films from DreamWorks Animation, which hasn’t yet released any films on high-def, also will debut on HD DVD only.
  • Surf’s Up awash with promos
    AUG. 20 | Sony Pictures Home Entertainment is bowing a splashy promotional campaign for Oct. 9 release Surf’s Up, including tie-ins with two restaurant chains: Carl’s Jr./Hardees and Chuck E. Cheese. The eateries will pack Surf’s Up-themed toys inside kids’ meals.
  • Building B to launch TV/’Net-delivered service 
    AUG. 20 | Building B, an upstart TV and movie delivery company launched by former execs from Paramount, Sony, Bell Labs and other leading companies, will join the increasingly crowded Internet video business with a hybrid TV/Internet-delivered movie service expected to launch this fall.
  • Disney to release BD-Live titles in 2008
    AUG. 17 | Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment next year will bow its first Blu-ray Disc titles with advanced interactivity, including Web-enabled and picture-in-picture bonus features. Sleeping Beauty will have BD-Live and picture-in-picture will be on Finding Nemo and The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (pictured).
