PARAMOUNT

Street: Sept. 18
Prebook: now
> The ’80s pop culture classic reissue is abetted with a hit-filled music CD.

The only prior DVD release of Adrian Lyne’s 1983 Flashdance was a bare-bones version back in 2002, so this iconic film was due for a makeover. The disc is well-loaded with extras. Most notable are a 15-minute retrospective, featuring director Lyne, producer Jerry Bruckheimer and other key talent, and a 10-minute rundown of the music. There are a total of five such featurettes, and they’re all worth a look, despite the fact that leading lady Jennifer Beals, who became a star thanks in part to her limber on-screen removal of her brassiere, is nowhere to be seen.

Shelf Talk: This film was a music hit machine, and the DVD acknowledges this fact with the inclusion of an exclusive six-track CD and accompanying call-out on the packaging. (“Maniac” and the Oscar-winning “What a Feeling” have never sounded better.) It’s a meaningful bonus, even if many fans already own the soundtrack, and makes this a real value given the suggested retail price. The box art features the image that is primarily associated with the movie—Beals wearing an over-sized, off-the-shoulder gray sweatshirt.

Musical romance, R (mature themes, language, sexual situations), 95 min., DVD $19.99
Extras: featurettes, six-track music CD
Director: Adrian Lyne
First Run: W, April 1983, $94.9 mil.
