> Cult following helped Jericho live another day on TV and could make this a popular DVD set.

This series about a small Kansas town struggling to survive following a nuclear attack against the U.S. faced its own struggle to survive, plagued by mediocre ratings, but it built a cult following. Ultimately, Jericho became one of the rare shows to be renewed after its cancellation, following a letter-writing campaign by fans. Thought-provoking and well-written, the show’s first season concluded with more than one cliffhanger, so additional episodes are very welcome. The six-disc, 21-episode set includes commentary tracks over five early segments by creator Jon Turtletaub and select producers and actors, along with a pair of documentaries. One documentary looks at the genesis, casting and making of the show, while the second, more interesting one is a “What If?” that traces the history of the nuclear threat during the Cold War.

Shelf Talk: The fan campaign, bolstered by a deluge of peanuts sent to CBS in homage to a line from the show, garnered a lot of publicity early in the summer. With seven new episodes planned for mid-season, this set will give devoted fans something to tide them over and a chance to recall what they love about the show. And the residual press might draw in curious sci-fi/cult fans.

Drama, NR (some mature themes), 960 min., DVD $49.99
Extras: creator/producers/cast commentaries, documentaries, deleted scenes
Directors: Jon Turtletaub, Martha Mitchell, others
First Run: CBS, 2006
