> Voyeurism, danger and hot young star Shia LaBeouf make this a surefire bet.
Disturbia pays homage to Alfred Hitchcock’s Rear Window—with a bit of John Hughes romantic comedy thrown in—with its tale of a teen (Shia LaBeouf) under house arrest who thinks he spots a murder going down in the house next door. Though the film plays unevenly, there’s no denying that it clicked with audiences to the tune of nearly $80 million, making it one of this year’s sleeper hits. The affable LaBeouf, cut from the cloth of John Cusack and Zach Braff, also makes an appearance on the disc’s commentary, where he’s joined in a fun, cell phone-interrupted pow-wow by co-star Sarah Roemer and director D.J. Caruso.
Shelf Talk: This one should be a strong mover, with its popular “teens in jeopardy” premise and the fact that star LaBeouf is presently scoring in the blockbuster Transformers. The DVD box art of LaBeouf spying on a girl next door through red-tinted binoculars, à la Jimmy Stewart in Hitchcock’s classic, screams danger and hot chicks, so those who were unaware of it in theaters could be swayed to give it a spin.
