Clint Eastwood’s film—a sturdy examination of the raising of the U.S. flag following the World War II battle on the island of Iwo Jima and how the famous photo of the event impacted American flag-raisers—is an outstanding look at a defining moment in U.S. military and sociological history.
Shelf Talk: Paramount’s initial movie-only release of this title just a scant eight weeks ago was obviously a rush job calculated to cash in on the Oscar publicity machine. So it was a foregone conclusion that a more complete package would be in the offing. Featuring new menus and a second platter of extras, there’s enough here to make consumers forget about the initial release altogether. But the $39.99 SRP is a bit pricey, especially for those who already bought the first edition or those who also want the companion film, Eastwood’s Oscar-nominated Letters From Iwo Jima, which is available in a five-disc commemorative edition ($49.96) containing both films.
