TALKBACK

Movie Gallery to shut as many as 450 stores

By Danny King -- Video Business,10/29/2009

OCT. 29 | PHYSICAL: Movie Gallery might close as many as 450 of its eponymous and Hollywood Video stores, or about 14% of its total, by the end of the year, as the No. 2 U.S. movie-rental chain struggles against increasing kiosk and by-mail sales by competitors such as Redbox and Netflix.

Movie Gallery, which has about 2,900 units, has closed 250 stores since the beginning of last month and might close another 200 by year end, the company confirmed today. The company has said it would shut 200 of its Game Crazy stores this month.

Movie Gallery has faced growing competition from U.S. movie-rental kiosk leader Redbox and by-mail leader Netflix since emerging from Chapter 11 in May 2008. In the past few weeks, Movie Gallery set up a “real estate hotline” for its landlords that promised a 48-hour response to their inquiry, implying the chain has had trouble keeping up with its rent payments. One landlord told Video Business that the chain was 20 days late paying rent to him.

The closures were reported by Bloomberg News earlier today.

I think Obama's administration should give them a bail out like they have done for the Auto industries. This would at least benefit more people that it did in the auto industry. I'm was a Diamond Member at Hollywood Video renting between 12-24 movies a month. Our store closure has left us with only Blockbuster in the area. I guess it's netflix for me because I hate Blockbuster's high rental prices and late fee's after three days.

Right now there is less than 3200 stores and looks like another 1200 stores may be closed in the next few months bringing them under 2000 units. Looks like most of Canada will be closed also however there is only about 50 stores left up there now. They may also be heading to court again under chapter 11 within the next few weeks, this will enable them to walk on more leases and not pay any bills again. Bottom line is if ya work for them start polishing off that resume, your gonna need it.

Former Manager..........

Something is seriously wrong with company, my store in Greensboro North Carolina was just shut down 2 weeks ago with out any notice at all. I went to work the Wednesday the 16th right before christmas and to my surprise there was my dm and some other manager and employees to pack my store and close the doors. Granted we had been an outlet since October 22. We did know that it was coming but thought that we would get a little notice. I have heard that recently the company is planning on filing chap 11 again are you serious.... To any who work or rent in a Movie Gallery or Hollywood Video you better start looking for a new job now before you out on your ass b/c this company doesn't give a shit about you or your family.

Get ready folks for another round of massive store closings coming in January. With rent still in the arrears MG finds itself being locked out of many locations unable to gain access to the inventory which in many cases is being sold off to cover back rent.
As the company fends off a complete collapse, more stores are on the chopping block.

notmgemployee, not only do they have to prove everything to the courts, they also have to obtain more financing. Taking the top 10-15% of the stores is not enough to pay off the 843,000,000.00+/- they owe in debt. Most likely those notes will not be paid and they will declare bankruptcy.
However going forward they will still need to secure financing for the future, now if you just declared bankruptcy on 843 million who is going to give them more funds. Keep in mind they have also taken a 30 day break from paying loans, 90 days break from paying landlords, and the studios have them on a very short terms and in some cases COD. They are getting fewer copies of movies. I now several snack vendors like Coke have dumped them for non-payment.
If they do emerge from bankruptcy yet again, I doubt they will be a serious threat to any indies anymore. BB has diversified so much MG will never be able to compete against them.
