Paramount to distribute TV programming, made-for-DVD movies
By Jennifer Netherby -- Video Business, 5/24/2007
MAY 24 | Following what is becoming a well-tread path, BET Networks is launching a new DVD division with sister company Paramount Home Entertainment to distribute BET TV programming on disc and develop made-for-DVD movies.
Constance Cribbs Knight, a former Buena Vista Home Entertainment executive, was named VP and will head the new division. Knight will report to BET Networks executive VP Byron Phillips.
“This is a great opportunity for us to broaden our relationship with our audiences and comes as we continue the rapid growth of the network, increasing our output of original TV programming and expanding into filmed entertainment,” said Debra Lee, BET Networks chair and CEO.
BET and Paramount released TV special Celebration of Gospel: Taking You Higher on DVD earlier this month, the first release under the distribution partnership.
Upcoming 2007 releases from the division include reality series College Hill and documentary series American Gangster. BET Home Entertainment will develop direct-to-DVD comedies, dramas and animated movies through the partnership.
“BET is a brand that is trusted by millions of consumers, and we are extremely enthusiastic about extending the brand’s reach through highly focused home entertainment releases,” Paramount Pictures worldwide home entertainment president Kelley Avery said.
In 2005, Paramount similarly partnered with MTV Networks to develop direct-to-DVD releases. So far, the two companies have developed and released DVD premieres All You’ve Got and Save the Last Dance 2, which both debuted Jan. 2. On July 10, the two will debut My Super Sweet 16: The Movie, a scripted-comedy based on the MTV reality series that follows the rich and spoiled as they prepare for and celebrate their 16th birthday.
