Buys theatrical, DVD, digital distribution rights for Odd Lot films
By Susanne Ault -- Video Business, 9/10/2007
SEPT. 10 | Re-confirming its drive to release higher-profile projects, Image Entertainment has snapped up U.S. theatrical, DVD and digital distribution rights to name features Suburban Girl and Undead or Alive.
The films were acquired from Odd Lot Entertainment.
Headlined by Sarah Michelle Gellar and Alec Baldwin, Suburban Girl is being considered for a theatrical premiere in 2008. Based on two short stories from Melissa Banks’ best-selling book The Girls’ Guide to Hunting and Fishing, Suburban Girl follows a young book editor who unexpectedly falls for an older man.
Undead or Alive, starring Desperate Housewives’ James Denton and Saturday Night Live’s Chris Kattan, is set for a DVD premiere this December. Told during the Civil War era, the movie matches a soldier with a cowboy as they face down a plague of zombies.
Image has made several overtures to ramp up the quality of its output, including its pact last year to distribute projects on DVD from Relativity Media, the production company behind Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby. Image hasn’t yet detailed the first releases from the Relativity deal. Some energy has likely been focused on its expected purchase this month by BTP Acquisition Group.
“We have made a significant commitment to being in the feature film business, and this agreement with Odd Lot is a perfect example of the type of high-quality, cast-driven projects that Image will bring to the marketplace,” said David Borshell, Image chief financial officer. “Odd Lot is a leader in independent feature production, and we couldn’t be more pleased to be in business with them.”
Odd Lot produced Green Street Hooligans and is currently underway on The Spirit, based on the comic series by graphic novelist Will Eisner.
“Image’s enthusiasm for our product and their strong reputation in the entertainment industry made them the clear choice for these projects,” said Bill Lischak, chief operating officer at Odd Lot. “We look forward to working with Image’s team as these and other potential Odd Lot films are released into the marketplace.”
