> The beloved romantic comedy returns with a bundle of new extras.
This new edition of the popular romantic comedy arrives two years shy of the film’s 20th anniversary, but, hey, who needs an excuse to re-release one of a library’s prized jewels, especially when loaded up with new extras? Director Rob Reiner and screenwriter Nora Ephron are all over this disc, which is how it should be, because they appear to have an easy-going rapport. The pair discusses the film’s genesis and some of the most memorable scenes in both a 20-minute sit-down and a commentary track that also includes Billy Crystal. Reiner marvels that his own mother is on AFI’s Top 100 film lines list for her “I’ll have what she’s having” punch line in the famous Katz Deli scene, and both take great delight in talking about the gender gap that is so essential to the plot. We also get short features on the long relationship between Reiner and Crystal, the role of New York City in the film and the true-life love stories that frame the plot.
Shelf Talk: Interestingly, this is the first disc version to incorporate the ellipsis marks (...) back into the movie’s title treatment on the box art, which is no small point according to Reiner and Ephron in their chat about the film’s development. A touchstone of popular culture (in addition to being a box-office and home video champ) and with a cast and crew that went on to great things after its success, When Harry Met Sally… enjoys instant name recognition. At the very least, it’s a central part of any Valentine’s Day disc promotion.
