> The young actresses from Annie recount their 'hard-knock’ lives.
The informal sorority of women who played the lead role and “the orphans” in the Broadway and national touring companies of Annie are profiled in this friendly, informal talking-head doc. Although the premier onstage Annie (Andrea McArdle) and the star of the feature film (Aileen Quinn) are absent, the filmmakers have gathered a large group of alumnae from the show who are quite candid about the good and bad times they experienced as tuneful moppets. Most notable is when the ladies reveal that they got their first exposure to sex and drugs during their time in Annie—when they were 8- to 12-year-olds.
Shelf Talk: Annie’s allure as a little-girl fantasy is undiminished, thanks to countless regional theater productions. This doc will appeal to those who grew up loving the show as well as fans of the “Annie” who achieved the most fame, Sarah Jessica Parker, who is interviewed at length here.
Documentary, color, NR (language), 75 min., DVD $19.95Extras: extended interviews, additional performances by reunited orphans
Director: Julie Stevens, Gil Cates Jr.
