Davie & Golimyr

By Ed Grant -- Video Business, 2/25/2008

Street: MARCH 4
Prebook: NOW
The Bible tale gets a fantasy makeover in this stop-motion animated feature.

The Old Testament tale of David and Goliath is given a new lease on life in this unusually colorful feature. Here, young Davie has to oppose the enemy of his people, a giant named Golimyr, with only a slingshot and his sidekick sheep. The film’s look is inspired by the playfully eccentric work of fantasy/religious artist James C. Christensen. His imagery blends well with the stop-motion animation utilized here, which has the feel of the beloved Rankin-Bass holiday TV specials of the ’60s and ’70s.

Shelf Talk: Davie doesn’t have the marquee-value voice talents of Shrek—the biggest star in the cast is Dukes of Hazzard’s John Schneider, who supplies the voice of the giant. But the feature is a comfortable, TV-friendly length and serves up its message of faith in an eye-pleasing fashion. Christensen’s universe is like a cuter, rounder version of more complicated fantasy worlds (think The Lord of the Rings), so small kids who enjoy fantasy stories will be easily drawn in.

Family animation, color, NR (nothing offensive), 45 min., DVD $14.98
