> Silly but high-octane paranoid thriller clicks in high-def.
The classic movie cliché of the villain who won’t stop talking gets a new twist in Eagle Eye, as the offender this time is a supercomputer blabbing about its master plan to hero Shia LaBeouf. That’s just some of the silliness you’ll find here, but it can be forgiven since implausibility is a staple of just about every “technology runs amok” film from 2001: A Space Odyssey to War Games (to which Eagle Eye clearly owes a debt). Strip away the ridiculousness and you’ll find a tightly wound adrenaline rush with lots of military hardware and some cool set pieces, all of which look more astounding and vivid in high-definition. Then there’s the very timely, Patriot Act-era theme of how much of our lives are stored somewhere on the grid as a result of public cameras, cell phones and our own day-to-day consumerism. Relevant to that is the “Is My Cell Phone Spying on Me?” featurette, one of several short but interesting supplements presented in high-def. There’s also a conversation between director D.J. Caruso and War Games director John Badham, whom Caruso calls his mentor.
Shelf Talk: LaBeouf and co-star Michelle Monaghan are two of the hottest stars right now, so their prominence on the kinetic disc packaging is sure to draw attention. Plus, the film’s $100 million take at the box office is nothing to shake your iPhone at.
