Coming at you again -- VB's Women Elite
September 12, 2008
No matter what your political persuasion, there's no denying that the 2008 presidential election has revitalized the national discussion about feminism, sexism and women in power positions.
In Hollywood, female executives often say that gender is no longer an issue in business. When we published our
last Women Elite issue in March, 2007, some of the things the women who were recognized said about gender were that "in our industry, it’s probably less relevant than in other industries” and “ I never thought that gender would limit my possibilities." Some said there was no longer a need for an issue singling out women for their accomplishments. Some said "What about the guys?"
Maybe that's more than politically correct, maybe it's just plain correct.
However, it is still true that in the home entertainment industry, as in most industries, there are not as many women as men in top positions. Both daily Hollywood trades, our sister
Variety and
The Hollywood Reporter, publish issues about power women in entertainment. And, believe it or not, we still get requests from readers asking when we're next going to recognize the industry's top women.
So, at the risk or being called old-fashioned--or worse--we will once again publish a recognition of the home entertainment industry's Women Elite, on Oct. 27. If you'd like to suggest an executive for inclusion, drop me an email at marcy.magiera@reedbusiness.com.
After all, it is the year of the woman. And it may be your last chance.
