Reed Hastings can only stuff 360 Netflix envelopes and hour...wait Reed Hastings can stuff 360 Netflix envelopes an hour?!
August 22, 2006
It sounds kind of impressive...A Talk of the Town piece in this week’s New Yorker (online now) peeks in on a day at a Netflix Shipping center making it interesting as only the New Yorker could. Apparently, Netflix CEO Hasting’s pace is about 100 envelopes too slow to make the cut as a Netflix envelope stuffer. The whole process is detailed in the piece along with other interesting tidbits (like most discs are returned on Tuesday):
At noon, the “stuffing” process gets under way. An associate grabs a sleeved outbound disk with one hand; inserts it into an electronically addressed envelope with the other; flips the envelope closed; rips off a peel over a sticker strip; and presses the envelope shut. Stuffing styles vary. One associate’s hands move so quickly that she seems to be a fan operating at highest speed.
