Betsy Rue's Bloody, Naked Valentine, Pt. I

April 24, 2009

Native Minnesotan Betsy Rue hadn’t planned on becoming an actress--she originally moved to L.A. three years ago at the age of 21 to study Sign Language, but then she caught the acting bug through a friend in the business. The next thing she knew, Betsy was taking around her headshots to auditions (pics that she took herself!), quickly leading to her first professional job in the venerable soap opera Days of our Lives. Appearances on such primetime TV shows as Las Vegas, CSI, How I Met Your Mother and NCIS soon followed, leading up to her breakout role in this year’s popular horror entry My Bloody Valentine 3-D (Lionsgate, Street: May 19). I caught up with Ms. Rue and spoke to her candidly about her memorable contribution to the flick, which is primarily an extended sex-and-violence scene filled with nudity.

VIDEO BUSINESS: First, I’d like to congratulate you for the impression you made in My Bloody Valentine 3-D. It’s rare for a critic from The New York Times to describe a scene in an over-the-top slasher flick as “the

one of the most entertaining five minutes I’ve spent in a theater in a long time.”

BETSY RUE: I know, I know! Yeah, I was very blessed by the reviews.
VB: Okay, so how did your role as Irene in the film come about?
RUE: Well, I got the call from my manager for the audition. I knew it was a horror movie but I thought it was just another part. I had no idea of the magnitude of the film—I didn’t know it was a remake of a cult film from the Eighties or that Lionsgate was behind it.
VB:
Was the audition of the revealing and closed-set nature?
RUE: I knew that the role had a fully-nude scene, but that wasn’t part of the audition. The audition sequence was for the hotel scene.
VB: Oh, the sex scene, you mean!

RUE: (laughs) Right.
VB: You have a great line of dialogue in that scene where you look up at yourself in the ceiling mirror and say, ‘God, I look hot!’
RUE: Thanks, that was all improv! So, I auditioned, but before they could officially give me the part, the studio needed to approve me boobs.

VB: Wow, that really does happen, doesn’t it?
RUE: It really happens, alright.

VB: I imagine it’s pretty professional—you go into the room, do what you have to do with the casting director, and then you’re done.

RUE: Yes, it was very easy. And the casting director was female!

Check back later in the week for the second half of my interview with Betsy Rue!!!

Meanwhile, here's the My Bloody Valentine's theatrical trailer, which features way too little of Betsy!
