Laid To Rest With Bobbi Sue Luther, Pt. I
April 28, 2009

You may have seen Bobbi Sue Luther looking beautiful onscreen before—flirting with Larry David on an episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm or gyrating as an Orion slave girl on a Enterprise installment or maybe even as a “Bar Skank” (that’s how she’s billed!) on Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. Well, now you can see even more of Bobbi Sue in her leading role in the horror flick Laid to Rest, which was released on DVD last week by Anchor Bay. The film, which concerns a young woman who wakes up one day in a coffin with a traumatic head injury and no memory of her identity, also happened to be produced by Bobbi Sue, with her writer/director husband Robert Hall at the helm. I caught up with the high-energy Ms. Luther for a fun phone chat—I was sitting in my midtown New York apartment, while the usually L.A.-based Bobbi Sue was bouncing around New York’s downtown Soho district with her cell phone.

VB: Hey Bobbi Sue! I hear you’re in New York…?

Bobbi Sue Luther: I am!. I’m eating a slice of pizza and walking through Soho.

VB: Are you here a lot?

Bobbi Sue: No, I’m actually here trying to close a deal.

VB: Good for you. Well, you’re in the right town and you’re providing a pleasant alternative to some Twittering I was about to do. Or is it Tweeting?

Bobbi Sue: Oh god, Twittering. I’m not into that stuff. I don’t even have a Myspace page.

VB: As a performer, I would think that a Myspace page would be a necessity these days.

Bobbi Sue: It’s not like I’m gonna get the role of a lifetime through Myspace. If someone contacts me through Myspace, then I’m doing something wrong and they’re doing something wrong. Let’s be honest.

VB: You’re one of the stars of Laid to Rest, which you also produced. Was producing an exciting new adventure for you?

Bobbi Sue: And more! It’s really been my primary focus since leaving the set of Laid to Rest. That’s why I’m in New York.

VB: Well, let’s start with your first one. How did Laid to Rest come about?

Bobbi Sue: My husband and I got together and decided we should do it. He really knows how to direct horror and I wanted a showcase to prove that I could act and carry a film as a lead. We collaborated on the idea early on and he wrote the script.

VB: How did you spend your days as the producer of Laid to Rest?

Bobbi Sue: We raised the money for the films ourselves and we ultimately sold it to Anchor Bay. I’m a natural born producer—I do it every day. It’s all about understanding the semantics when you deal with people. As far as the legalities and paperwork and work with unions and payroll companies, that was the more difficult part to learn. As for the human relations part, it’s built into my DNA. It started off as kind of blind producing, but if you have a goal in place and you know what your schedules are and you know what resources you have financially to achieve your goal, that’s all you need to know!

Check back later again for the second half of my interview with Bobbi Sue Luther!
