A 'Pirates' life for me
October 5, 2007

Ever wondered how to talk like a pirate? Well, I got lessons straight from the source, from two of the pirates in Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End.

Disney recently hosted for journalists a Pirate Boot Camp, a swashbuckling affair at Will Rogers Beach in Pacific Palisades, Calif., to celebrate the studio’s DVD launch of At World’s End, which will street Dec. 4 and is anticipated to be one of this year’s big fourth-quarter releases.

Held befittingly on International Talk Like a Pirate Day (ITLAPD), the boot camp offered lessons on pirate speak, sword fighting (just don’t get hurt!) and proper pirate attire (wigs and scarves aplenty!). There also was a buffet and juice bar, which served custom-made smoothies in coconut cups. I could get used to this kind of lifestyle … if I wasn’t prone to seasickness.

For those wanting an even greater insight into the seafarer’s way of life, At World’s End supporting pirates Lee Arenberg (“Pintel”) and Martin Klebbal (“Marty”) spent some time chatting about the film. When asked about the Pirates franchise, the actors spoke of the friendships made during the filming and the old-fashioned filmmaking techniques used. Hmmm, do pirates have a soft side? They also talked up the DVD, which according to Marty, does a fine job of documenting the stunts and making-of logistics. The two even took some time to discuss Blu-ray Disc, which had a demonstration later that day in Hollywood, followed by a screening of the film. Tech savvy pirates as well? Arrrrrr!
